“Having just bought our house, we were looking for a design & build specialist to re-model the space.”
The vision for this renovation project was to transform a 1950s extended Dorma-bungalow into a unique and modern residence. The house had huge proportions, with a 2,500sqft ground floor, however the layout was flawed, guests often got disorientated in rooms and passageways. What the owner wanted was a ‘Bond Villain’ style house – minimalist, monochrome, art deco style with flowing open-plan rooms, luxury finishes and tranquil lighting.
Cost: Approx. £100k
Timescale: 3 months
Square Meterage: 235
Whilst the structure of the house was well established – consisting of a 50s bungalow with a more recent extension – the two structures were not working in harmony with each other. With a clear design brief and drawings to hand, we opened up the hallway, blocked up and knocked through three other walls. Stone extended the art deco look from the outside, with a focus on fresh Farrow & Ball Wevet white walls contrasted by black skirting and architrave, complemented by contemporary fittings. In total we designed the downstairs hallway, cloakroom, utility room, ground floor bedroom suite (snug, bedroom and ensuite), kitchen/ diner, lounge, office, and gym.
In the kitchen (20m x 3.5m, our largest kitchen design to date), industrial dome pendants contrasted with a Murano chandelier, over the 5m kitchen island with Dekton worktop, and contemporary wall and LED kitchen lighting. It was all about the open plan entertaining space – so we widened the hallway and knocked through from the hallway into the kitchen diner exposing a clear view through the house to the quad-folding patio doors onto the garden. On exposing the sub floors – it was clear that the 50’s building regs were a little ‘lacking’ in substance and therefore we strengthened the floor trusses and insulated underfloor to maximise warmth and minimise noise levels when walking on suspended open plan floors. At the same time, it gave us the opportunity to rewire and replumb the entire ground floor (replacing the old infrastructure) – one of the huge advantages of a large renovation. For the more modern extension using slab and bean construction, we insulated and poured concrete floors to deliver a bang level and solid foundation for the c.1,500kg Miton kitchen.
For the floor coverings we used Karndean timber effect LVT planks for the main house and large square Polyfloor tiles for the kitchen dinner (high wear area out onto the garden). The entire ground floor was plastered, painted and skirting applied to all rooms and walkways. A stunning renovation that the customer truly loves and everyone else admires!
Customer Testimonial
“Having just bought our house, we were looking for a design & build specialist to re-model the space. We were first recommended to Stone by a friend who had just had their kitchen renovated in Dore and that looked amazing!
John Stone came round to survey the house and spent a lot of time with us to understand our vision. He was very considerate of our lifestyle, budget and tastes. He then created some amazing ideas to open the house up and turn it into our dream home.
We decided to move out of the house during the 3-month works. Paying regular visits to see progress and make key decisions about materials and finishes. The team on the job were super talented, courteous, and always put us first – which was a really important part of the experience for us. The refurbishment was completed bang on-time and budget. The quality of the finish was outstanding – no short cuts, no snagging, no complaints.
We’ve since used them again for a luxury ensuite bathroom upstairs and also recommended Stone to many friends who have also had work done and are extremely happy with the outcome.””
